FAQs

  • My goal is to become an airline pilot. So I would be lying if I said I didn’t become a CFI to build hours toward the airlines. However, I find flight instructing to be very rewarding. It is an incredible experience to see a student go from "what’s a rudder?" to flying their first solo. You get to relive your own milestones through their eyes—first takeoff, first solo, first cross country—and that never gets old. It brings an immense pleasure to be a part of your student’s success and celebrate with them.

  • Be Eligible (14 CFR § 61.83, 61.103):

    • be at least 16 to solo

    • 17 years old to be eligible to obtain a Private Pilot License

    • able to read, speak, write, and understand English.

You'll need a minimum of Third-Class Medical Certificate from an FAA-approved doctor (AME) and a Student Pilot Certificate, which you can apply for through IACRA.

A valid government-issued ID is required, and if you're not a U.S. citizen, TSA approval through the Flight Training Security Program is necessary.

You'll also need some basic supplies, including aviation headset, logbook, sectional chart, E6B flight computer, FAR/AIM manual, and ForeFlight.

    • Minimum of 40 hours. (14 CFR § 61.109(a))

(Realistically, most people need 75 hours on average according to the FAA)

  • It typically takes 3 to 6 months to obtain a Private Pilot License (PPL). A lot of it depends on how often you fly a week. Ideally you want to fly 2-3 times a week.
